What are plastics? They are environmentally unfriendly chemical materials which are non-biodegradable and hazardous to the environment. Around the world, loads of plastic waste are produced everyday and they are thrown, especially into the ocean, which causes severe unbalance of ocean ecosystems.

Plastic is commonly used in a wide rage of applications as they are cheap, durable and easy to produce. However, also because plastic is cheap, people often just throw away plastic products soon after its first use and create huge damage to the environment.

As plastic is non-biodegradable, it will be left in the ground for many centuries being it is fully decomposed. Meanwhile, it will result in huge pollution. Because of urbanization, this problem is most seriously observed in cities.

According to the latest statistics, the world’s annual output of plastics comes to approximately 105 million tonnes and is continued to be rising. In particular, a person from the western and European countries uses 70 kg of plastics per year on average. In contrast, India appears to be a greener country with its annual output being 2.5 million tonnes and annual per-capita use being 4 kg only.

As the world’s annual output of plastics continues to rise, the amount of plastic wastes found in the ocean is rising rapidly as well. For instance, traces of polymers can be found in almost 85% of the objects on beaches. Rubbish like packaging materials is commonly found on beaches as well.

The large amount of plastic wastes found in the ocean posts a real threat to and destroys the habitat of a lot of marine lives like the sea turtles and seabirds. In fact, plastic wastes posts a much bigger threat to our ecosystem than problems like global warming and the thinning of our ozone layer.

To keep away from this destructive threat, it is necessary not to use the non-biodegradable carry bags. Replacing any plastics in any places at anytime by durable and reusable jute bags and canvas bags can certainly help. In addition, manufacturing companies ought to use brown paper or other alternatives to pack and wrap cartons.
